CASCINA SARIA WINERY

Cascina Saria is relatively new to the barbaresco area of winemaking.  Although the family has been growing grapes for many years in Neive, just north of the prestigious Serraboella vineyard, they just began vinification within the last decade.  This small family of farmers (led by papa and daughter) has proven that with the proper care the nebbiolo grapes they grow can be made into outstanding wine.  Their determination and the fact that they are fortunate to find themselves in the heart of the Langhe, on terroir that is some of the best in Italy, makes success almost guaranteed.  An interesting fact is that the estate falls partly in the traditional Barbaresco producing region of Neive and partly into that of Costigliole renowned for Barbera d'Asti.  The result is, not surprisingly, excellent wine.

Viticultural Details

Cascina Saria harvests these nebbiolo grapes from a 30 year vineyard and drives them a short distance to its boutique cantina.  The moderate climate of this region enables the grape to mature slowly so that its flavor has great depth and character, yet Piedmont's varied elevations and exposures produce world class wines for everyone's tastes.

BARBARESCO DOCG

Vinification and Maturation:

After pressing, the grapes ferment 8 days with 4 extra days of maceration.  The 100% nebbiolo wine matures for 18 months in barriques of which 30% are new oak and 70% used oak so as not to extract too much oak during the process.  There is additional fining in steel casks up to 12 months before bottling.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Ruby red

Bouquet: Intense nose of cherry, blackberry and balsamic

Flavor:  Dry yet balanced with good body and mouth feel and a clean finish

Serving Suggestions: Great with meats, stews, roasts, and matured cheeses

DOLCETTO D’ALBA DOC

Vinification and Maturation:

After pressing, the grapes ferment and then settle for six months in steel casks.  Traditionally, most Dolcetto wines are drunk while young.

Tasting Notes:

Color: Vivid violet

Bouquet: Notes of vanilla and fresh flowers

Flavor: Soft tannins and slightly sweet on the mid palate

Serving Suggestions: Flexible, suitable with foods from antipasti to grilled fish - and in summer months we even prefer to serve it slightly chilled.
